Matt Dylan
As country as Carolina Moonshine
To say that Matt Dylan is a country performer is a gross understatement. When you hail from a rural North Carolina town called Walnut Cove, grew up on a farm as well as tended it, how can you be anything BUT country?
I first met Matt one night a couple of months ago at Boomr'z in Winston-Salem where he was hanging out on the deck of the venue and club owner Penny Goodloe introduced us. From the moment the first words came out of Matt's mouth I knew I had to hear this man sing. His speaking voice was low, clean and clear and had incredible resonance. I knew at once that if this voice could hold a tune he was destined for bigger and better things. I vowed that the first opportunity I had I would go hear him perform. That opportunity came this past weekend.
At one time I was deeply into country music, had interviewed many country artists and wrote for a country music magazine, but over the past decade or so my interest in country had waned because the "twang" seemed to have gone out of the genre and the artists that actually had lived the songs seemed to have become few and far between. Saturday night at Johnny & June's Ultra Saloon in Winston-Salem I discovered that real country music - good country music, is alive and thriving in the persona of Matt Dylan.
Playing to an almost capacity crowd at the venue, Dylan and his band Most Wanted delighted the crowd with a mixture of original songs as well as a variety of covers. I can't remember the last time I heard someone cover Conway Twitty - and do him justice. I remember seeing Conway in concert two weeks before he died and if he could hear Dylan covering his songs he would surely be impressed. What Dylan brings to the table, or stage actually, is authenticity. You can't sing country, really sing it, if you haven't lived it and each note that Dylan's rich baritone voice sings is filled with life - the country life.
You can catch Matt Dylan this coming Friday at the Reidsville Civic Center in Reidsville, NC. and if you can't wait till then to hear him take a listen and a look at his video Carolina Moonshine below.
